iPhone 18’s New Camera Tech Could Be a Game Changer
We’re still waiting for the iPhone 17, but there are already whispers about what the iPhone 18 might bring. One of the biggest surprises is about its camera.
DigiTimes, a well-known source in the tech supply world, recently shared that Samsung is working on a new three-layer camera sensor for the iPhone 18. This sensor, called ‘PD-TR-Logic,’ could make the camera more responsive, improve photo quality by reducing noise, and offer better dynamic range.
This is a big deal because Sony has been Apple’s go-to for camera sensors. Now, it looks like Samsung wants in on the action. This change could shake things up for future iPhones.
Exclusive: Samsung is currently developing a “3-layer stacked” image sensor in a PD-TR-Logic configuration for Apple.

This sensor is more advanced than Sony’s existing Exmor RS, and I believe it cannot be ruled out as a potential candidate for the main sensor.
Samsung is…
Back in July 2024, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned that Samsung might start supplying 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera sensors for iPhones by 2026. That’s around the time we expect to see the iPhone 18. However, it’s still unclear if this new sensor will be used for all the cameras or just the Pro models.
With reports from several sources, including a leaker named Jukanlosreve (see tweet above), it seems pretty likely that Samsung will be part of Apple’s camera plans soon. But since the iPhone 18 is still a while away, things could always change before then.
