Insomniac Hints at Joining PlayStation’s Big Hollywood Push
Sony has been busy turning its popular PlayStation games into movies and TV shows. From hits like Horizon and Helldivers to plans that didn’t pan out for Gravity Rush and Days Gone, the company is leaving no stone unturned.
This approach follows its struggles to bring Spider-Man’s side characters to life on the big screen.
Now, Insomniac Games, known for Ratchet & Clank and the Spider-Man titles, is showing interest in jumping into the mix.
In a recent interview, Ryan Schneider, who’s set to co-lead the studio with Chad Dezern and Jen Huang next March, talked about adapting their games for TV or film.
Insomniac already experimented with this idea back in 2016 with a Ratchet & Clank animated movie.
The film launched alongside a PlayStation 4 remake of the original game, which borrowed scenes and story elements from the movie.
The Ratchet movie didn’t do well with critics or at the box office, which scrapped plans for a Sly Cooper film and stalled the Ratchet franchise for years.
But now, with the success of 2021’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Schneider seems optimistic about revisiting the idea of bringing their games to other media.
While Insomniac’s older series like Resistance and Sunset Overdrive remain on hold, its popular action games are a more likely choice for adaptations.
Sony has a full plate of projects, including the second season of The Last of Us coming to HBO this April. Meanwhile, Insomniac is focused on Marvel’s Wolverine.
While Chad Dezern couldn’t share much about it, he teased, ‘We’re holding back our excitement for now, but when it’s time, we’ll be ready.’
