If Presented with the Right Offer, Almost Half of All Buyers Could Be Persuaded to Buy a Used Car
New research by the Startline Used Car Tracker (via AMOnline) shows that nearly half of drivers might buy a used car this year if they get a great deal. According to January’s Startline Used Car Tracker, 48% of people could be convinced to purchase with the right offer.
The study highlights several reasons why people might choose to buy. Besides a good deal, 46% mentioned needing to replace their current car, while 39% said cheaper finance would influence them. Others were drawn by a wider selection of cars (27%) or a better warranty (26%).
22% of those surveyed said they would buy a car they liked, and 16% would appreciate a quicker, easier buying process. Another 16% valued a high part exchange offer.
Paul Burgess, chief executive of Startline Motor Finance, commented, ‘Many people are still feeling financial pressure, and our research shows that practical reasons are driving used car purchases. Most motorists want deals that make financial sense, like cheaper finance, good warranties, and high trade-in values.’
Interestingly, only 9% of buyers would be tempted by government help to purchase an electric car. Burgess noted that although there is industry support for government-backed financial incentives, such as zero-interest loans, few motorists seem interested in these options.
The results are based on feedback from 329 consumers and 58 dealers, providing a clear picture of what is motivating used car buyers in 2025.
