Honda and Nissan are discussing a massive merger that could make them the third-biggest automaker globally. They’re planning this as the auto industry faces big challenges with electric cars taking over and China becoming a major player in the market.

The merger could wrap up by 2026 if all goes as planned. Nissan’s current partner, Mitsubishi, is also considering joining this alliance but will decide by early 2025.

Right now, Nissan and Mitsubishi are part of a group with Renault, the French carmaker. However, tensions in that partnership have grown after Carlos Ghosn, the former alliance chairman, faced legal trouble in Japan and fled the country.

Renault’s spokesperson has said the company will look at all options to protect its interests as Nissan’s main shareholder.

This potential merger shows how traditional carmakers are adapting to keep up with the growing demand for electric vehicles and new market dynamics.
