Google Messages has been growing fast, making it a serious competitor in the messaging world. With RCS support and deep Android integration, it has secured a strong position. Google keeps adding new features, making sure the app stays relevant.
In just the last month, we’ve seen some major updates. Secure cross-platform RCS messaging, dual SIM RCS support, a built-in backup tool, RCS for 911 services, and even an option to unsend messages have all been spotted in testing. Google isn’t slowing down.
Now, something even bigger is in the works: WhatsApp video call support inside Google Messages. It’s not full integration, but it’s a step closer.
Thanks to code digging, we now know that Google Messages might soon get a dedicated WhatsApp Video Call button. This won’t merge the two apps, but it will make things easier by acting as a shortcut. Instead of switching apps, users can launch a WhatsApp call directly from Google Messages.
The feature isn’t live yet, but it has been manually enabled in Google Messages version 20250131. Right now, when users start a video call, Google Messages defaults to Google Meet. With this update, there will be an extra option for WhatsApp video calls, as long as both people have WhatsApp installed. If the recipient doesn’t have WhatsApp, the option won’t appear.
For now, this only works for one-on-one video calls. Group calls will still rely on Google Meet. We’ll have to wait and see how this develops, but it’s clear Google wants to make Messages more versatile without breaking its existing setup.
This move could make it easier to stay connected without juggling multiple apps. Whether Google will expand this beyond WhatsApp remains to be seen, but for now, it’s a small but interesting step toward smoother communication.
