Google Maps to Change Names of Gulf of Mexico and Denali Following Trump’s Antics
Google Maps is planning to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in its app. The change will only happen after U.S. government sources officially update the name. Additionally, Google says it will switch back to using the name Mount McKinley for North America’s tallest peak, instead of Denali.
These updates tie back to an executive order signed by Donald Trump on his first day in office. Google confirmed that in the U.S., their maps will follow official local names, but globally, users will see both names displayed.
The Associated Press (AP) weighed in, stating it will stick with the name Gulf of Mexico in its Stylebook.
The AP also noted that Trump’s executive order is only enforceable within the United States and does not require other countries to adopt the changes. Mexico and international organizations have no obligation to recognize these updates.
Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai, who attended Trump’s inauguration, has been part of recent debates as well.
The company previously faced antitrust pressure during the Biden administration, which called for breaking up parts of Google’s operations, including its Chrome browser. A federal judge is still reviewing that case.
