General Motors' New Patent Potentially Teases Two Simultaneous Charge Ports

GM is working on a new idea for electric vehicles (EVs) with multiple charging ports and the ability to send power both in and out. This was shown in a patent filed by GM in June 2023 and published in December 2024. The filing doesn’t focus much on the hardware but rather on how the system could be used and controlled.

The goal seems to be offering more flexibility for how we charge and discharge EVs. For example, one charging port could be used to charge the vehicle, while the other could send power to another device or even another car.

GM also suggests a system where cars are linked together. A single car would plug into a charging station, then transfer power to a second car, which could then pass power on to a third.

This would require new types of charge controllers and more advanced thinking on how bidirectional charging could work. GM has already expanded this kind of charging to some of its vehicles, but so far, it’s only been with one charge port at a time.

Other car makers, like Ford, have explored similar ideas, and while Tesla and Volvo are also looking into bidirectional charging, GM’s proposal could lead the way if regulations like those in California push the tech forward.
