Nintendo has officially named its next console the ‘Switch 2’. Some of us might wonder why they chose this straightforward name instead of something more creative. Former PlayStation head Shawn Layden shared his thoughts on this during a chat with Reece Reilly on the ‘Kiwi Talkz’ podcast.

Layden believes that Nintendo has built strong brand recognition with the ‘Switch’ name. He said, ‘They’ve created so much brand value in the word Switch, why would you mess with that?’ Given that the Switch has sold over 146 million units worldwide by September 2024, it’s clear that the name carries significant weight.

When discussing Nintendo’s place in the gaming world, Layden noted that the company has carved out its own unique path. He mentioned that everyone respects Nintendo for its contributions to the industry and believes they will continue to thrive. He emphasized that Nintendo has been in the business for a long time, experiencing various highs and lows, and will continue to be successful.

In a similar vein, Microsoft’s gaming chief, Phil Spencer, recently expressed his confidence in the Switch 2’s success. He stated that he believes the system will be a ‘massive success’ and advised against betting against Nintendo.

These insights highlight the confidence industry leaders have in Nintendo’s decisions and the strength of the ‘Switch’ brand.
