In a daring series of thefts that sounds more like a movie plot than reality, Nuruhussein Hussein, 40, has been charged in Scottsdale, Arizona, for a sophisticated scam involving cryptocurrency and the guise of an Uber driver.

According to reports by Fox 10 and NBC News, the alleged fraudster cleverly targeted victims looking for rides outside a hotel—a spot likely chosen for its high traffic and distracted clientele.

Hussein’s method was simple yet effective. He reportedly called out the names of his targets as they waited for their actual rides, gaining their trust to get them into his vehicle.

Once inside, he would concoct reasons to handle their phones, like pretending to have issues with his own device or needing to adjust something related to the Uber app.

It was during these moments that he accessed the victims’ digital wallets, transferring substantial amounts of cryptocurrency to his accounts.

The scam didn’t just stop at theft. Hussein reportedly turned aggressive when confronted, making veiled threats to ensure compliance. One victim even feared Hussein was armed, although no weapon was seen.

This alarming experience led to Hussein’s arrest, and he now faces severe restrictions, including a $200,000 bond, internet prohibition, and mandatory electronic location monitoring while he remains in Maricopa County.

Adding to the intrigue, there seems to be some confusion between the police’s public statements and the court documents concerning the exact amount stolen—estimated around $223,000, though authorities initially cited over $300,000.

This discrepancy might be due to the volatile nature of cryptocurrency values. As the case unfolds, more details are sure to emerge, possibly clarifying these inconsistencies.
