China’s DeepSeek AI Topples ChatGPT in the U.S.
DeepSeek, a Chinese AI platform, has caught attention with its DeepSeek R1 model and the DeepSeek AI Assistant app. The app has now reached the top spot among free apps on the Apple App Store in the US, pushing OpenAI’s ChatGPT out of first place.
Meanwhile, it’s quickly climbing the charts on the Google Play Store, where it currently sits in 10th place.
One of the reasons people are talking about DeepSeek is its bold claim that the R1 model rivals heavyweights like OpenAI and Meta. What’s more surprising is that DeepSeek says it trained the model for only $12 million, a fraction of the $500 million that OpenAI reportedly spent on GPT-5.
This cost-efficiency was achieved using older NVIDIA hardware, which has sparked curiosity, especially since the US has restricted China’s access to newer NVIDIA tech.
Android Authority’s Dhruv Bhutani tested the DeepSeek AI Assistant and praised it as a strong alternative to ChatGPT. He highlighted the app’s high-quality responses, its mostly free access, and the option to run it locally on personal devices.
DeepSeek seems to be shaking up the AI space, challenging the big players with its budget-friendly approach and accessible technology.
