Chevy is taking a bold step into the future of racing with its 2025 Blazer EV SS. This electric vehicle is making history by serving as the official pace car at the Daytona 500 this weekend. While the race will still feature traditional gas-powered cars, this marks the first time a battery-electric car will lead the field.
The Blazer EV SS is no slouch. With a 615-horsepower engine and a 0-60 mph time of just 3.4 seconds, this high-performance SUV is ready to impress. It’s built with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system and has sportier upgrades like Brembo brakes and a tuned suspension for better handling.
In addition to the pace car, Chevrolet has also unveiled a NASCAR prototype: the Blazer EV.R. This all-electric model, with a 1,300-horsepower output, showcases what electric racing might look like.
The EV.R uses parts from NASCAR’s Next Gen chassis and has already been tested on the track at race speeds. Though it won’t be racing at Daytona, it’s a significant step forward for electric motorsport.
Chevy’s move comes after Ford revealed its own electric NASCAR prototype earlier this month, based on the Mustang Mach-E.
With both automakers diving into electric racing, Toyota remains the only major brand in NASCAR’s Cup Series not yet showing an electric prototype. Will we see a Toyota bZ4X racing car soon? Time will tell.
