Recently, we noticed that the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has issued fresh ratings for ‘Resident Evil 5’ and ‘Resident Evil 6’. Interestingly, these ratings are specifically for the Xbox Series X|S consoles. This development has left many of us scratching our heads, wondering what Capcom might be planning.

The new rating for ‘Resident Evil 5’ was highlighted by Wario64 on Bluesky. It’s curious that this rating is solely for the Xbox Series consoles. The content description remains similar to previous versions, with only slight textual differences. This pattern mirrors the subtle changes observed between the original PS3/Xbox 360 release, the subsequent Gold Edition, and the PS4/Xbox One port.

What’s even more puzzling is that, just a few weeks prior, a similar rating appeared for ‘Resident Evil 6’, also exclusively for the Xbox Series consoles. In today’s gaming landscape, where companies like Square Enix are embracing releases across multiple platforms, and even Xbox is broadening its horizons, it’s unusual to see a re-release limited to a single console family.

Resident Evil 5 is ESRB rated for Xbox Series

This raises several questions. Could it be that the PlayStation 5 or other versions are simply awaiting their ratings? Or is Capcom planning something unique for the Xbox Series X|S? Given Capcom’s recent trend of remaking mainline entries in the Resident Evil series, one might speculate that ‘Resident Evil 5’ could be next in line. However, it’s hard to believe that a full-fledged remake would be revealed solely through an ESRB rating.

A more plausible explanation might be that Capcom is preparing remastered versions or updates for ‘Resident Evil 5’ and ‘Resident Evil 6’ tailored for current-generation consoles. Yet, the choice of platforms and the specifics of these potential releases remain a mystery.

As we await official announcements, it’s clear that Capcom has something up its sleeve. Whether it’s a simple remaster, a comprehensive remake, or something entirely unexpected, only time will tell. Until then, we’ll keep our eyes peeled and our fingers crossed for more information.
