Blizzard Entertainment Could Make More TV Shows and Movies Based on its Games, Says Johanna Faries

Blizzard Entertainment could make more TV shows and movies based on its games. The company’s president, Johanna Faries, said they are open to exploring new ways to bring their stories to life.
“We are Blizzard Entertainment, not just Blizzard Games,” Faries said in an interview with Windows Central. She explained that their game worlds could be used in many different ways. However, she also said they need to be careful and make sure any new projects are done well.
One of Blizzard’s past movie projects was Warcraft, released in 2016. The film made a lot of money, earning around $440 million worldwide. However, it did not do very well in the U.S., making only $47 million.
Most of its earnings came from China, where it made over $225 million. Despite the box office success, reviews were not great, and former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick even called it one of the worst movies ever made.
The Warcraft movie went through many changes before it was finished. At one point, Spider-Man director Sam Raimi was attached to the project but left. Duncan Jones, known for Moon and Source Code, eventually directed the movie. He said that Blizzard did not like Raimi’s original vision.
A few years ago, Activision Blizzard started a division called Activision Blizzard Studios to turn its games into movies and TV shows. The only project it released was Skylanders Academy, an animated series on Netflix. The leaders of this division have since left, and it is unclear what will happen to it now that Microsoft owns Activision Blizzard.
For now, Blizzard is keeping its options open. Faries did not confirm any specific projects, but she said they are always thinking about ways to bring their worlds to a bigger audience.
