Samantha Béart, known for playing Karlach in Baldur’s Gate 3, isn’t having it when it comes to studios trying to recreate Disco Elysium without its original creator, Robert Kurvitz.
She made it clear in a tweet that she won’t take part in any project that claims to be a spiritual successor if Kurvitz isn’t involved. ‘If your “spiritual successor” to Disco Elysium doesn’t have him, then save both of us time and miss me with that casting call,’ she wrote.
Béart’s strong stance shows just how much respect she has for Kurvitz and his work. It’s a bit surprising, though, considering Disco Elysium has inspired so many others to try and capture its magic. Still, when you’re someone like Karlach, it’s easy to turn down any role that doesn’t meet your standards.
Kurvitz’s journey is also pretty wild. He came up with Disco Elysium during a tough time. The game’s creation began during a drunken night in Tallinn, with him and others living in pretty poor conditions. Despite the rough start, the game became a hit. However, after the studio split up, the team went their separate ways.
Now, two spiritual successors have been announced, and neither has Kurvitz on board. Kurvitz’s work wasn’t just limited to the game. He also tied Disco Elysium to his novel Sacred and Terrible Air, which didn’t sell well, with just 1,000 copies sold. It was a tough time for him, and he admits he struggled with alcoholism after the book’s failure.
To the next studio that tries this: if your “spiritual successor” to Disco Elysium does not involve creator Robert Kurvitz, then save both of us some time and miss me with that casting call.

Kurvitz has moved forward and now runs a new studio called Red Info with Disco Elysium’s lead artist, Aleksander Rostov. The studio is backed by NetEase, who recently made headlines for reversing a controversial decision regarding its Marvel Rivals game.
With the original Disco Elysium creator still missing from these new projects, Béart’s refusal to get involved is a clear statement of loyalty and respect.
