AI Helped The Beatles Drop a Grammy-Winning Song 50 Years Late
A song from The Beatles that was stuck in the vault for decades finally got released in late 2023.
Titled Now and Then, the track features vocals recorded about 50 years ago and a guitar part from 1995.
Back then, the technology wasn’t good enough to fix the issues in the audio, so the song was left unfinished.
Thanks to AI, things changed. When John Lennon first recorded the demo, his piano and vocals were locked together on the same track, making it impossible to separate them cleanly.
But modern machine learning made it possible to split them, allowing Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to add fresh bass and drums and complete the song almost 30 years later.
In November 2024, Now and Then got two Grammy nominations. It was up for Record of the Year but lost to Kendrick Lamar’s Not Like Us.
However, it still took home the award for Best Rock Performance. Sean Ono Lennon, John Lennon’s son, accepted the trophy on his late father’s behalf.
