Volvo Steps Up with AI-Powered ES90, Featuring NVIDIA’s Tech

Volvo is set to unveil its latest model, the ES90, which harnesses cutting-edge AI technology to adapt to and improve with the driver’s habits over time.
This new model is a leap forward from its predecessors, being built on Volvo’s versatile Superset tech stack. This platform streamlines the design process, enhancing vehicle safety and efficiency.
The ES90 integrates the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin platform, elevating it to the status of the most advanced core computing powerhouse in Volvo’s lineup.
Each of these vehicles can perform about 508 trillion operations per second, thanks to housing two of NVIDIA’s DRIVE AGX Orin system-on-a-chip, each capable of 254 trillion operations per second.
NVIDIA, known for its high-quality PC GPUs, has shifted its focus towards spearheading AI technology for the automotive industry. The DRIVE AGX Orin, launched in 2019, is designed to support complex AI operations, essential for the functionalities Volvo aims to offer.
Anders Bell, Volvo’s chief engineering and technology officer, shares, ‘The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today and is designed to be improved further with time.’
This vision is supported by the car’s impressive suite of sensory hardware including a single LIDAR array, five radars, eight cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, all paired with an advanced driver understanding system.
Volvo’s strategy focuses on making each car a learning supercomputer, personalizing the driving experience to maximize efficiency, particularly for electric vehicles.
With a strong software-first approach, Volvo can continuously enhance the vehicle’s safety features via over-the-air updates, leveraging real-time data.
This shift from hardware to software as the main innovation driver marks a significant transition for Volvo, yet the company maintains its commitment to safety, ensuring it remains at the forefront of electric vehicle technology.
With each new discovery, Volvo’s vehicles become safer, proving that rapid learning and adaptation are the keys to future advancements.
