Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 console could have a surprising new feature—players may be able to turn it upside down. A recent patent reveals that the new system could automatically flip the screen 180 degrees if the player attaches the controllers on the “wrong” side, making the system usable in an upside-down position.

Instead of the sliding rail system used in the original Switch, the new Joy-Con controllers attach via a slot and seem to be held in place by magnets. If the controllers are inserted the other way around, the Switch 2’s display would automatically flip to match, allowing the user to play comfortably.

This feature might not seem important at first, but the design could help with the system’s single headphone port. By flipping the console, players can choose whether to have the headphone jack at the top or bottom based on what feels most comfortable for them.

The system’s USB ports also play into this flexibility. With the USB port at the center of the Switch 2’s bottom, and another off-center at the top, third-party accessories (like a camera) could be designed to attach in different positions, depending on how the user prefers to play.

The console’s unique design, including these new Joy-Con controllers and their attachment mechanism, is expected to be officially detailed by Nintendo in a Direct event this April.
