France to Invest More Than €100 Billion in AI Development

On the eve of the Action for AI Summit in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron shared big news. The French government has secured a massive €109 billion ($112 billion) investment from private companies for the country’s growing AI industry.

Speaking on France 2, Macron was enthusiastic about the announcement, comparing it to the U.S.’s Stargate project, a huge AI initiative launched by Donald Trump last month, which promises $500 billion in funding.

While the French population is much smaller than the U.S.’s, Macron pointed out that the investment ratio should still be significant for France.

A large portion of this money—between $30 billion and $50 billion—comes from Arab Emirates and French investors. While Europe has been behind the U.S. and China in AI investment, Macron aims to change that.

France is already leading in AI research and talent development, with examples like Arthur Mensch, the 32-year-old founder of Mistral AI.

Besides private funding, France’s government is also contributing with €2.1 billion as part of its France 2030 roadmap to boost the country’s technological influence.

With all this money pouring in, Macron hopes that France—and Europe—can start to take on a bigger role in shaping the future of AI, reducing the current dominance of the U.S. and China.
