Apple has recently canceled a project for a pair of AR glasses that would need to be connected to a Mac. This news came from Mark Gurman, a reliable source, who reported that the project was officially shelved last month.

The glasses, which would have looked like regular eyewear, were designed to have built-in displays and required a Mac for full functionality.

However, this doesn’t mean that Apple has given up on AR glasses altogether. Instead of rushing out a product that might not be ready for prime time, Apple is now focusing on creating a standalone AR glasses model.

While we may have to wait a while for this to happen, the goal remains the same: to make a product that is more advanced and capable than anything currently on the market. It’s expected that we’re looking at a timeline of 3-5 years for this to come to life.

In the meantime, Apple’s Vision Products Group, led by John Ternus, is continuing to develop the necessary technology for the future glasses. This includes work on screens and chips that will help make the standalone glasses a reality. Ternus, apparently, is being careful and wants to avoid any failures, so the company is taking its time.

While visionOS sets the stage for AR glasses, there’s no rush to get something out too soon. Apple still has a lot of work to do, but fans can look forward to the day when they release something truly innovative.
