Nintendo Is Preparing to Stop Scalpers from Abusing the Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo is getting ready to launch the Switch 2 this year, and the company wants to make sure scalpers don’t ruin it for everyone. President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that Nintendo is taking serious steps to keep things fair, making sure enough consoles are available for those who actually want to play.
Speaking to Japanese media, Furukawa said, ‘We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date. We are making preparations.’ That means the company is learning from past mistakes, ensuring the new system doesn’t suffer the same shortages as before.
Scalpers were a nightmare for console buyers in recent years. The Switch was hard to find during the pandemic, but the worst cases were the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launches in late 2020.
Bots scooped up consoles in seconds, leaving regular buyers with no chance. Resellers then flipped them at ridiculous prices, turning a profit while actual gamers were left empty-handed.
Nintendo’s strategy to fight scalpers is simple: make more consoles. Furukawa previously stated that producing enough units is the best way to stop resellers from taking over. That plan hasn’t changed, and Nintendo is determined to get the Switch 2 into as many hands as possible.
More details about the console will come in April during a Nintendo Direct, and for those eager to try it early, there’s a special Nintendo Switch 2 Experience event. However, people are already trying to resell tickets online. Don’t fall for it—these tickets are non-transferable and won’t work if bought secondhand.
Nintendo isn’t just focused on hardware. Even after a slow sales year, the company is in a strong position, with huge games like Metroid Prime 4 and Pokémon Legends Z-A set for 2025. The next few years are shaping up to be big for Nintendo, as long as they can keep scalpers from getting in the way.
