Aaron Rabin, known for Jack Ryan and Nobody 2, is writing Universal Pictures’ adaptation of the hit video game series Just Cause. The project is bringing in some big names, with Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto set to direct.

The production team includes Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, the duo behind Bullet Train, Nobody, and The Fall Guy. They’ll produce under their 87North banner. Also on board are Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson from Story Kitchen, the company behind Sonic the Hedgehog and the upcoming Tomb Raider projects at Amazon and Netflix. Dan Jevons will serve as executive producer.

Just Cause first hit consoles in 2006 and follows Rico Rodriguez, a covert operative tasked with toppling corrupt governments. The game is packed with explosive action, massive open-world environments, and a wild sense of humor.

Its title references the real-life U.S. invasion of Panama, known as ‘Operation Just Cause’. Rico, also called ‘The Scorpion’, is one of gaming’s few iconic Latino protagonists.

Universal is betting big on video game movies after the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s, which earned over $1.4 billion and $290 million worldwide. With this lineup of talent, Just Cause has the potential to be their next big win.

Max Jacoby will oversee the project for 87North, while Ryan Jones and Tony Ducret will handle it for Universal. Rabin is represented by CAA, Untitled Entertainment, and Gendler, Kelly & Cunningham. 87North works with CAA, JSSK, and 42West, while Story Kitchen is repped by WME, Pryor Cashman, and TriplePoint PR.
