OpenAI Launches “Deep Research” in ChatGPT, Promises to Deliver Complex Analyses in Minutes
OpenAI just launched a new feature in ChatGPT called Deep Research. It’s designed to help people dig into complex topics without spending hours searching for information. If this sounds familiar, that’s because Google Gemini has a tool with the same name. OpenAI claims their version can do in minutes what would take a person much longer.
Deep Research is built for people who do serious knowledge work. It can gather and analyze data from hundreds of online sources to write detailed reports. OpenAI says the results are on par with what a research analyst would produce.
But it’s not just for work. Users can also use it to research major purchases, like cars, furniture, and appliances, helping them make smarter decisions without the usual hassle.
According to OpenAI, Deep Research runs on a special version of its upcoming o3 model, built for web browsing and data analysis. It searches the internet, reads and interprets information, and adjusts as it goes. The tool also provides citations for every source and explains how it reached its conclusions, making it easy to double-check the results.
Right now, Deep Research is only available to ChatGPT Pro users, but OpenAI plans to roll it out to ChatGPT Plus and Team users soon. To try it, users just tap ‘Deep Research’ in the chat window and enter their query. They can even upload files like spreadsheets for extra context.
The process takes between five and thirty minutes, depending on the topic. While it works, a sidebar shows its progress and lists the sources it’s using. OpenAI also plans to add images, data visualizations, and more in the coming weeks to make reports even clearer.
