Tesla Confirms All V4 Superchargers Will Charge Up to 325kW in North America
Tesla has revealed that all its V4 Superchargers in North America now support charging speeds of up to 325 kW. Right now, though, only the Cybertruck can handle this kind of power.
Tesla’s Supercharger network can be tricky to figure out. There are four generations of Superchargers, but the newest one, the V4, has caused some confusion. Many of the V4 charging stalls were installed with older V3 cabinets, meaning they didn’t actually deliver the full power the new stalls are capable of.
Back in 2016, Elon Musk downplayed 350 kW charging, calling it a ‘children’s toy.’ When the V3 Superchargers were rolled out later, they were capped at 250 kW.
This was fine for Tesla cars, but as the company started allowing non-Tesla EVs to use the network, it became clear that 250 kW wasn’t cutting it. Some other EVs and charging stations already support speeds of 400 kW.
Recently, Tesla has been improving its setup. V3 cabinets paired with V4 stalls—sometimes called V3+—were upgraded to support over 300 kW last year. Now, Tesla says all V4 stalls in North America can charge at 325 kW. The announcement specified ‘V4 posts,’ meaning these upgraded V3+ setups.
For now, Tesla’s Cybertruck is the only vehicle in the lineup that can benefit from the higher power output. However, many non-Tesla EVs could take full advantage of it. Tesla has also begun rolling out complete V4 stations with updated cabinets capable of 500 kW, signaling even faster charging options in the future.
