Samsung’s Big Bet on Non-Invasive Glucose Monitoring

A device that can check blood sugar levels without needles would change the game for millions of people living with diabetes. For years, the idea has felt out of reach, but companies like Samsung and Apple have been working behind the scenes to make it real.

Samsung, in particular, has been focusing on this for at least five years. After its Unpacked event, the company hosted a health forum in San Jose, California, where experts shared how artificial intelligence and new tools are shaping healthcare.

Dr. Hon Pak, Samsung’s Senior Vice President and Head of Digital Health, shared updates on the company’s progress.

Dr. Pak confirmed that Samsung is ‘deeply invested’ in non-invasive blood glucose technology. He also highlighted the company’s work on continuous glucose monitor (CGM)-based nutrition coaching, which could be integrated into the Samsung Health app in the future.

Interestingly, Pak mentioned that Samsung is developing an optical system for continuous glucose monitoring, but there’s no release date yet. While he sounded optimistic, he was careful to emphasize that the technology still has challenges to overcome before it’s ready.

If successful, though, this tech could transform how people manage their health.

One of the biggest hurdles is approval. Last year, the FDA warned against using unapproved devices, like smart rings and watches, for blood sugar tracking. Samsung will need to meet strict testing and clinical requirements to gain the green light from the FDA. This step is crucial to ensure any new technology is safe and reliable.

For now, it’s clear Samsung is making progress, but the finish line is still out of sight. If they get it right, though, this could be the start of something huge in healthcare.
