Sony has officially launched Soneium, its Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain platform, following a successful four-month testing phase that attracted over 14 million users. According to Blockscout data, the platform processed an impressive 47 million transactions during this period.

Developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs (Sony BSL), a subsidiary of Sony Group, Soneium is designed to make blockchain technology more accessible to creators and audiences.

The platform includes features like an NFT-based fan engagement system and an incubation program, Soneium Spark, which supports creators in building innovative projects.

Sota Watanabe, Sony BSL’s director, explained the platform’s focus on “chain abstraction,” a concept where blockchain technology operates seamlessly in the background, allowing users to engage without needing to understand Web3 complexities.

He highlighted Soneium’s mission to onboard everyday users and emphasized that creativity has the power to transcend boundaries and connect people through an on-chain economy.

Soneium’s technology is built on Ethereum’s OP Stack and Superchain architecture, aiming to bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3. This alignment with the Optimism Foundation allows Soneium to deliver what Sony calls a blockchain platform that “evokes emotion and empowers creativity.”

The platform’s testnet, launched in August 2024 under the name Soneium Minato, served as an environment for developers and creators to test their apps before moving to the production stage.

Soneium Spark, the platform’s incubation program, attracted over 1,700 applications and selected 32 projects for further development, showcasing strong interest from developers.

Entertainment remains a key focus for Soneium, with applications spanning games, NFTs, and social platforms. Sony BSL plans to expand its efforts by exploring frameworks that protect creator rights and support equitable value distribution between creators and their fans. The ultimate goal is to foster a seamless transition from Web2 to Web3, bringing real-world utility and user-friendly design to the blockchain space.

Chairman Jun Watanabe described Soneium as a platform that empowers global innovation and collaboration. He emphasized its potential to protect intellectual property, enhance fan engagement, and create new possibilities for communities and creators.

The official launch of Soneium marks a significant step for Sony in the Web3 space, showcasing its commitment to supporting creators and enhancing the connection between technology and entertainment.
