E-Bike Firms React with Speed-Reduction Updates after California’s Stricr New Regulations
California recently tightened its rules for electric bikes, which we have reported on, particularly focusing on throttles. The new regulations make it clear that e-bikes with throttles can no longer exceed speeds of 20 mph, which limits the class categorization between Class 2 and Class 3.
Previously, many e-bikes could operate as either, with some reaching 28 mph with pedal assist alone and others with throttles.
Now, e-bikes need to be either Class 2, restricted to a 20 mph throttle limit, or Class 3, which allows up to 28 mph but only with pedal assist and no throttle. These updated laws aim to make the categorization simpler and clearer.
Specialized, a well-known e-bike maker, is taking steps to make sure their bikes comply with the new rules, electrek reports. They’ve sent out a notice to owners of the Globe Haul ST cargo e-bike, offering a firmware update that limits the bike to Class 2 speeds, removing the ability to reach higher speeds on pedal assist:
This update will also come with a new Class 2 compliance sticker to replace the old Class 3 sticker. To get the update, owners just need to visit their local Specialized dealer. It’s a voluntary fix, but it’s likely necessary for California owners to stay within the new legal requirements.
