WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, is currently testing a revamped design that prominently showcases AI chatbots.

This fresh look, which is being trialed on the app’s Android beta version, introduces a new tab specifically dedicated to AI interactions.

According to WABetaInfo, this update reserves one of the four main tabs for AI features exclusively.

Users can expect a selection of ‘Popular AI characters’ alongside others grouped by theme.

The app doesn’t stop at chatbots, however; additional AI-driven functionalities include the generation of images and stickers, plus an AI-enhanced search tool, all backed by Meta AI.

The AI features are not entirely new to the app but were previously tucked away in the general Chats tab. The latest update aims to make these features more accessible.

Furthermore, WhatsApp is exploring enhancements to these offerings by allowing users to create their own personalized AI characters—a feature spotted in another recent beta update.

While Meta has previously enabled the creation of custom AI bots via the AI Studio on Instagram’s website, integrating this capability directly within the app simplifies the process considerably.

Despite replacing the existing Communities tab, the functionalities it offered are still available, just relocated to a ‘streamlined’ version of Community creation now found within the Chats tab.

This beta version of WhatsApp is downloadable via Google Play, although entry is capped, and sign-ups are currently closed.

It remains to be seen whether the AI tab will make its way to the live version of the app, and if so, this feature will likely be restricted to regions where AI functionalities are already supported.
