‘The Witcher IV’ Devs Provide More Insight on How Ciri Is Going to Be Different from Geralt

CD Projekt Red has shared a 10-minute behind-the-scenes video about The Witcher IV’s cinematic reveal trailer. It reveals some cool details about the game’s direction and confirms that Ciri will be the main character instead of Geralt.
Tomasz Marchewka, the story director, explained that “from the very beginning we knew it had to be Ciri” as the lead. Game director Sebastian Kalemba added, “it just felt natural to us and we believe that Ciri deserves it.” The decision to focus on Ciri, instead of Geralt, was clearly something the team was passionate about.
The trailer highlights how different Ciri is from Geralt. Cinematic director Kajetan Kapuściński pointed out that Ciri’s actions, like the way she fights monsters and reacts to the death of Mioni, show her emotional depth. These are things Geralt wouldn’t do, and the team wanted to showcase that from the very start.
Narrative director Phillip Weber also shared that Ciri and Mioni are like “mirrors of each other.” He pointed out how Mioni’s father, Zhivan, says things about his daughter’s growth that could easily apply to Ciri, too.
“I’ve watched Mioni grow from a devilishly curious child into a remarkable young lass with much grace, wisdom, and kindness,” he says. Writing this line so it could reflect both father-daughter relationships was important to the team.
While we still don’t know everything about The Witcher 4, this first glimpse into the game shows the devs’ clear vision for the story. It looks like we’re in for a very different experience with Ciri at the center.
